The Hammock
You're going to wonder what a hammock has to do with genealogy but read on and it will become clear. I was having a conversation with my 88 year-old mother one spring afternoon in 2002. I told her I was thinking about buying a hammock. She blurted out, "Iona BECHTEL"! I was lost at that point in the conversation and said, WHAT?? "Iona BECHTEL, her father made hammocks". My mother's Grandmother was a BECHTEL from Berks County Pennsylvania and I had been researching this family for about 2 years. How come you have never said a word about Iona BECHTEL before now! "I guess I just remembered her; you know it's been a long time ago", was her answer. Off to the computer I went to search for Iona BECHTEL. Looking at the Census records, I found Iona Bechtel living with her family next door to my Grandmother Margaret and her three children, Mona, Ethel and Jack.

Notes for JOHN KENNETH HUGHES:
John Kenneth Hughes or "Kenny" as he was called by friends, was a Coxswain for the US Coast Guard during WWII. He received the Coast Guard Commendation Ribbon for his act of bravery on December 7, 1946 while fighting a fire aboard the US Coast Guard Cutter DIONE when that vessel was undergoing repairs in Norfolk, VA. Donning an oxygen breathing apparatus, he voluntarily entered the intense burning galley and fought the fire with water fog. Despite the smoke and flames, he remained below at the peril of his life until the fire was well under control. His initiative, courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the US Coast Guard. The citation was signed by Admiral J. F. Farley. Kenny was an active member of the Branchville Volunteer Fire Company, No. 11 in 1944. Memories of Kent by Dixie Dowell Hopkins as told by her daughter, Jeanne Hopkins Clancy on January 27, 2003: Mom told me tonight that your father was the only one who could ever climb this giant pine tree that used to be right behind my mom's house. She says every time he came to visit, he had to climb the tree to prove that he could still do it. No one else would ever even attempt it. She also said that she and your Dad were very close growing up and that he was the best-looking one of the cousins!

Marriage Notes for MONA ROWE and JOHN HUGHES:
Somewhere in the 1940's (she doesn't remember exactly when it was), Mona met Kenny one night in the Starlight Inn. The Starlight Inn was a local hangout in College Park, Maryland and she had gone there with friends. He was there in his Coast Guard uniform and several women were eyeing him. Mona remembers smiling at Kenny. He went home with her that night to 2J Research Road in Greenbelt, Maryland, she says, "because there was beer in the fridge". He forgot his hat that night in the Starlight Inn. Many years later, Mona and Kenny went back to the Starlight Inn, where he proceeded to look for his hat. An attendant asked him when he left it there and Kenny replied "some 20 years ago!"

In 1996, Tommy and I realized two life long dreams, his desire to live on a farm and my childhood dream of living near the ocean. Someday Farms is the name we chose for our 9-acre farm located 20 minutes from Ocean City in a little town called Willards. We grow chickens for Tyson, 21,000 to be exact. We love country living. Tommy is an avid supporter of nature conservancy and spends a great deal of time & effort tending to the wildlife, farming, and working a full time job in Salisbury.I work a full time job in the Information Technology Department of Perdue Farms, Inc. in Salisbury. As a hobby, I've been working on family genealogy for going on 3 years now with the last 6 months spent on the Baldwin Family. Cousins, we have a great family history. It should be kept current and passed down through the generations of each branch of our family tree.
